I show up wearing my precious star hat; it is my very first day of school and I am so proud my cockiness may be leaking from me. I am asked to take it off not once, not twice, but twelve separate times throughout the day.

"I cannot take this off because this is my crown. I am the princess of the starpeople and they gave me this hat."
"Laney, please?"
"I cannot take this off because…"

Repetition wins. My teachers give in and decide I can still learn with a hat on my head.

I suppose you get away with a lot in kindergarten, because I am able to wear the hat the next day and the next. Children point and laugh with
